Clinical Training Experience in Department of Cardiovascular Medicine
1) Why did you choose NMS?
Being the oldest private medical school in Japan, there is no doubt that Nippon Medical School is shrouded
in its own historic identity and culture. I wanted to experience this proud and prestigious school with my own eyes and gain insight into the technological advances developed there.
2) How was your study in Japan?
I was assigned a 4 week placement within the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine.
During the placement, I attended morning handover meetings, observed surgeries, and received instruction in EKGs.
My personal highlights were the sessions in surgery, observing procedures such as catheter ablation and pacemaker lead removal. A member of the faculty would travel with me and explain what was happening in English to me in detail, enabling maximal understanding. I could also raise questions and points about the procedure and further deepen my understanding in doing so. This was the same for ECG teaching sessions which occurred each week, which furthered my learning in an area of medicine which I have to keep revisiting on account of how difficult it can be. Finally, morning handover sessions were also enjoyable as I could really feel the cardiology team had a good relationship and strong rapport. Smiles and laughter accompanied the handovers in appropriate amounts, displaying what a healthy team dynamic should look like.
3) How was your life in Japan?
I commuted to NMS by Tokyo Metro from my self-arranged accommodation; Suica, a prepaid e-money card, was accepted both on the airport line and in the city, and I had no problem getting around in a safe and secure environment.
The people are incredibly respectful, kind and considerate of others. There is a set way of living and etiquette which applies in all situations (for example, explicitly no phone calls on trains). These norms are all based on respect and consideration, and it is a way of living which I feel suits my own set of morals perfectly. The country itself is highly organised and efficient, it’s incredible to watch the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo and it’s services function so smoothly. At the same time, Japan has managed to retain its traditional culture and ideals to such an extent that it can feel like being in two different worlds at once.
4) Any comment on NMS?
I cannot thank the Department of Cardiovascular and wider Medical School Faculty enough for the once in a lifetime opportunity they have given me. Dr Murata, Dr Asai, Dr Hachisuka, Dr Uchiyama and many other mentors and Mrs.Osaki from IEC have guided me diligently throughout the entirety of this placement while constantly displaying the passion they have for their chosen field of medicine. It is inspiring for a future doctor like myself to witness, and I have no doubt that the future generations of doctors at Nippon Medical School are in safe hands.
5) Do you have a message for people who are interested in studying at NMS?
I would recommend NMS to any student considering clinical electives. The healthcare professionals I worked with are all very diligent, punctual, and passionate about their chosen field. I observed similar qualities in them that I have witnessed in the healthcare professionals at my own university and hospitals I have been placed at, placing an emphasis on high level deduction, problem solving, teamwork, and rapport building in equal measure.
One useful piece of information; As English is not well-spoke in Japan as a whole, utilise Google translate Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or help on account of the language barrier. Be sure to learn basic phrases in Japanese. Travel and explore this beautiful country. Have fun!
6) Memories of Japan:
I learnt that I was right about my set of values and morals. For years I have wanted to visit Japan, knowing that there is a set of societal norms which differ somewhat from western countries in how they are followed and practiced. The way in which Japanese society conducts itself always sat right with me, and after coming here for a significant period of time I can say with confidence that this way of living, with respect and consideration at its centre, agrees with me and how I choose to conduct myself.
