Mia Mary Urwin from the UK
Clinical Electives in the Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology
1) Why did you choose NMS?
I had heard positive things about NMS from previous Cambridge students who had attended during there elective. I knew I wanted somewhere in Tokyo and this felt like the perfect spot.2) How was your study in Japan?
I spent 4 weeks across Obstetrics and Gynecology and had a highly rewarding time. I was welcomed by staff and other students alike, all keen to help me learn Japanese, while also communicating challenging medical information in English. I saw cultural and practice based differences between maternal care in the UK and in Japan, and it was enlightening to reflect on why these differences existed, both on my own, and in conversation with staff.3) How was your life in Japan?
I found my own accommodation a 15 minute walk away. The area in which the hospital is situated is beautiful, with a shrine just over the road and plenty of local restaurants. I took my evenings to travel through the well connected city and into central Shibuya, Shinjuku, Taito, Bunkyo etc. I also took weekends to Yokohama, Atami, and Kamakura- all of which I would recommend to future students.4) Any comment on NMS?
The staff across both Obstetrics and Gynecology were endlessly helpful and kind. I found everyone was keen to chat and to teach as much as they could, as well as recommend local activities, and discuss differences in healthcare systems. The doctors and students at NMS were just as interested to hear about the NHS as I was to hear about the Japanese system.5) Do you have a message for people who are interested in studying at NMS?
I would absolutely recommend studying at NMS. The O&G department were fantastic, but I met other students in other departments who also had glowing reviews. You will be supported no matter your level of Japanese, and the canteen food is amazing!!6) Memories of Japan:
My favorite memories in Japan have to be Kamakura, and the dinners and tourism I did with Japanese students and both O&G team doctors!写真1.jpg)
