From the United States Clinical Program 2019

Derek Steven Dixon from the United States

Clinical Electives in the Dept of Rehabilitation, Chiba Hokusoh Hospital

1) Why did you choose NMS?

I choose Nippon Medical School because of its reputation as a great school and its openness to host international students. I have a special interest in rehabilitation medicine and it is a rapidly growing and expanding field in Japan, as it is in America.

2) How was your study in Japan?

Everything was excellent. I was able to see many different rehabilitation hospitals and experience the care of patients at all stages, including acute, convalescence, and chronic or life stage. I learned a lot about the disease specifics and rehabilitation protocol for patients with brain or spinal cord injury and other trauma related injuries or orthopedic procedures.

3) How was your life in Japan?

I greatly enjoyed staying in Japan. I have never had a more enjoyable rotation or experience. Everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming to me. I have wanted to visit Japan since I was a child and this rotation allowed me to accomplish that dream. I wish that I had more than a month to experience even more Japanese culture, but I will certainly make plans to visit Japan again.

4) Any comment on NMS?

Everyone I met from NMS was great to work with and excellent at their jobs. Everyone seemed to enjoy working there. The encounter I had with NMS students was also positive, as it was a good chance to talk to students in the same field as me but from a different culture and background.

5) Do you have a message for people who are interested in studying at NMS?

I would say if possible definitely study with NMS. You will not be disappointed in the experience and the memories you will make along the way.

6) Memories of Japan:

My fondest memories of Japan are of all the wonderful people I worked with during my time there, who I am happy to call my friends. I was able to experience much of Japanese culture and history during my time in Japan. I was able to take a bus tour of Nikko and see the Toshogu Shine. I was able to travel throughout Tokyo and had many excellent experiences there, including the Tokyo Skytree. I saw many other shines and temples during my time in Japan.
