From Australia Clinical Program 2026

Rosie Catherine Devenish Meares from Australia

Clinical Electives in the Dept of Cardiovascular Medicine

1) Why did you choose NMS?

I had heard from previous students that NMS had a good program for students. I also had my friends going at the same time so it was nice to know I would be there with them.

2) How was your study in Japan?

It was great. I saw so many cases and treatments in the department that we don’t get to see in Australia and it was really interesting to see how critical care works in other countries. The language barrier was tricky at times but it was a good test of my clinical identification skills to try and figure out what was wrong with a patient without the context. The doctors on the team were also very kind and tried to explain what was happening in English when they could.

3) How was your life in Japan?

Japan is a very interesting and beautiful country. My friends and I enjoyed our afternoons exploring the different neighborhoods in Tokyo. We had weekend trips to Nikko National Park, Kyoto, and skiing in Nozawa Onsen. Tokyo is really accessible with lots of great public transport to get you anywhere you want to go.

4) Any comment on NMS?

I appreciated how open NMS were to having Australian students, who didn’t speak Japanese, in the hospital. The staff made lots of efforts to get us involved. The placenta was mostly observational, as this is how medical students are taught here, but you are encouraged to float and watch any interesting case or procedure that comes in.

5) Do you have a message for people who are interested in studying at NMS?

I would highly recommend studying at NMS. The staff are friendly and relaxed, the medicine is interesting and you get to see some really high acuity cases with lots of fascinating presentations because of the population size of Tokyo.
